Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
