Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
