Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
