Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
