Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
