Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win.
