Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
