Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
