Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
