Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
