Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win.
