Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose.
