Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
