Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
