Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
