Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
