Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
