Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
